Malfoy
family
Lucius was the name of a Roman
emperor who fought against King Arthur in legend. Interesting, considering
that Lucius Malfoy and Arthur Weasley are bitter enemies and have even
come to blows. It is also interesting that King Arthur killed Emperor Lucius
witha blow to the head with Excalibur. In the scuffle in Flourish and Blotts,
Arthur knocked Lucius into a bookshelf and Lucius was hit in the head by
an Encyclopedia of Toadstools. (web reference: Le
Morte d'Arthur BOOK V CHAPTER VIII).

Minerva
was the Roman goddess of wisdom. McGonagall comes from poet Sir William
Topaz McGonagall (1825-1902), of Dundee, Scotland. He is considered to
be a very bad poet indeed.
McGonagall,
M. G.
Student at
Hogwarts in the late 60s/early 70s. He or she played Quidditch for Gryffindor,
and in 1971 won a small plaque which is now part of a trophy in the trophy
room. (SS/f)
NOTE:
This is certainly not Professor McGanagall, since she is much older than
James Potter and was a teacher at Hogwarts in 1971, according to PA. His
or her name appears on a wooden shield in the Trophy Room in the film only.
Since other information on that shield is problematic in that it contradicts
JKR's statement that James Potter was a Chaser, this McGonagall cannot
be considered part of the official canon.
McDonald, Natalie
Gryffindor,
94-01
Natalie's
name comes from a Canadian girl who was very sick. She loved the Harry
Potter books and contacted JKR. The author wrote her and told her her some
of the secrets of the books to come, but Natalie had died by the time the
letter arrived. Natalie's mother responded and she and JKR have since become
friends. Jo put Natalie in GF, sorted into Gryffindor, as a tribute. (story
originally appeared in the Toronto Globe and Mail)

Mulciber

who walked upon two legs qualified as a "being" and was therefore entitled

Myrtle
Hogwarts student,
early 1940s
Myrtle was
a somewhat dumpy, pimply faced girl who wore rather thick glasses. She
was teased mercilessly by Olive Hornby, a fellow student, and hid in the
bathroom to cry quite often. One of those times, she encountered the Basilisk
from the Chamber
of Secrets and was killed. She then took to haunting Olive and eventually
returned to the bathroom where she had died to remain there, weeping and
wailing. The students now refer to her as Moaning
Myrtle and the bathroom she haunts is out of order.
The
myrtle tree is a close relative of the willow tree. "Moaning Myrtle" is
a similar phrase to "weeping willow." The actress who plays Moaning Myrtle
in the film (CS/f) also appeared in the film Bridget Jones' Diary.
Her first scene in that film has her standing in a bathroom crying on the
phone to Bridget.
