Timeline of his life

Harry, Hermione and Ron see Professor Remus J. Lupin for the first time on the Hogwarts Express. He is wearing extremely shabby wizard’s robes and has light brown hair flecked with gray, though he is quite young. He looks ill and exhausted. Ron observes, “He looks like one good hex would finish him off.” But Lupin is a capable wizard. He drives one of the Dementors of Azkaban from the compartment and earns Madam Pomfrey’s approval for having given the students chocolate to help them recover. 

Professor Lupin’s classes give the students their first true experience with Defense Against the Dark Arts and Dark Creatures. His teaching style, building confidence with knowledge with kindness and humor, makes his classes the most popular. To assist Harry with the Dementors, Remus Lupin teaches him the Patronus Charm, working with him to help him develop the skills necessary to use this difficult spell. He spends time with Harry, becoming a mentor and a friend.  Perceptive and even-tempered, Lupin deflects Snape’s hatred and gives poor Neville Longbottom his first moment of glory when facing the Boggart.

The truth of Professors Lupin’s illness continues to elude all except Hermione, who, after Lupin disrupts the confrontation between Harry and Sirius Black in the Shrieking Shack, exposes Lupin as a werewolf. Thoughtful and introspective, Lupin reveals some of his own difficult life and the history of the group of friends which included James Potter and Sirius Black, and of the Marauders Map. Harry learns that Professor Lupin is “Moony”, one of the creators of the Marauders Map. To prove the truth of their story, Remus and Sirius force Peter Pettigrew (Scabbers) to return to human form and the sad story of Pettigrew’s betrayal of Lily and James Potter unfolds. But racing to the rescue, when the map shows Sirius Black drag Ron and Peter into the Whomping Willow with Hermione and Harry in pursuit, Remus had forgotten the Wolfsbane Potion and later transforms. Pettigrew escapes into the woods and Harry uses the Patronus Charm to save Sirius, Hermione and himself from the Dementors. Concerned for the safety of the students, Remus Lupin resigns and leaves Hogwarts.

???? - Date unknown.  Bitten by a werewolf, he becomes one himself.  “I was a very small boy when I received the bite”. 
1971 - September - invited to attend Hogwarts by new Headmaster Albus Dumbledore; Remus begins his first year at Hogwarts.
          - A house is built in Hogsmeade, a tunnel dug connecting the house to the Hogwarts grounds and the Whomping Willow planted to enable him to transform in safety and secrecy.
           - Sorted into Gryffindor, becomes close friends with fellow students James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew.
1972 - September - begins his second year at Hogwarts 
Potter, Black and Pettigrew learn that Lupin is a werewolf and resolve to become Animagi to keep him company.
1975 - During their fifth year at Hogwarts Potter and Black master the complex spells to become Animagi and assist Pettigrew to do the same. They accompany Lupin when he transforms. Under their influence he becomes less dangerous, his mind less wolfish.
1976 - Black, Lupin Potter and Pettigrew leave the Shrieking Shack to explore Hogwarts and Hogsmeade by night. They create the Marauder’s Map and sign it with their nicknames: Mooney, Padfoot, Wormtail and Prongs.
???? - Date unknown.  Black, Potter and Lupin earn the hatred of Slytherin Severus Snape when a prank devised by Black exposes Snape to the werewolf. 
???? - Date unknown. The Marauder’s Map is confiscated by Argus Filch.
1977 September – begins seventh year at Hogwarts. 
1978 - Leaves Hogwarts and is part of the “crowd” supporting Dumbledore in his opposition to Voldemort.
1981 - Suspected by Black of being the spy passing information to Voldemort; Black persuades the Potters to use Pettigrew as Secret-Keeper. 
         - Oct 31--Nov 1 - Loses his closest friends with the death of the Potters and subsequent “death” of Pettigrew and imprisonment of Black in Azkaban. 
???? - Date unknown.  Discovery of the Wolfsbane Potion enabling Lupin to keep his mind when he transforms.
1993 - Protects Harry Potter from a dementor on the Hogwarts Express while enroute to take up a position as DADA teacher at Hogwarts. 
         - Befriends Harry and teaches him the Patronus Charm in private lessons.
1994 - June - Lupin and Black confront Pettigrew in the Shrieking Shack and discover more of the circumstances surrounding the death of Harry’s parents and Black’s imprisonment. 
         - Lupin resigns, exposed as a werewolf by vengeful Snape. Lupin is concerned that students are at risk and leaves Hogwarts.
1995 - Sirius Black is sent to alert the old crowd and to “Lie low at Lupin’s for a while”.
