"Nuthatch"
soft pastels
|
hunts for insects heading down a tree, and in this position arks its head and chest outward to form a 90 degree angle. When I was asked to paint this nuthatch I knew I was also going to be asked to depict him in this very position. I spent nearly a month observing a couple that frequent my backyard feeders and finally captured a male with my camera after he stayed in that position for about 30 seconds. He was as still as could be and appeared to be listening keenly tosomething. Later I went for a walk in my woods and gathered bark and leaves from an old white oak tree (one of the nuthatch's favorites) and took them to my studio where I painted him on one. -Suzanne Adams |
