Belted Kingfisher

soft pastels

Story
I always loved kingfishers as a child, and would observe them
diving for perch at our cottage on Anchor Bay and my home on
Austin Lake.  To paint this image, I searched for kingfishers at
nearby lakes they are known to frequent, and  then took a pontoon
boat trip  down the Huron River where I  followed them as they
stayed just enough ahead so I could not get a photo.  I chose to
paint a female because of her characteristic extra rust colored band around her belly depicting the "belt", and placed her in a sycamore tree.  As I painted this bird I realized how her striking primitive looking heas resembles the prehistoric Pterodactyl’s.  -Suzanne
