"A Ruby in the Thistle"

soft pastels
(original sold)

Story
This soft pastel painting was inspired by my memories of the thistle wildflowers that grow throughout the meadows in the Irish Hills of Michigan.  The bumble bee, busy gathering pollen on a thistle flower top, shows how small the ruby-throat really is.  When I was a young child, I caught a ruby-throat in my hands while wandering in my grandma's garden.  I thought I was catching a moth or dragonfly, but when I opened my hands to see what I had, the tiny bird swiftly hastened away.  This vision remains in my mind, even to this day.   -Suzanne
