"Caught On Guard"
by Suzanne L. Adams

soft pastels

Story
Max, the Great Pyrenees who lived down the road from me in Manchester, MI, guarded his sheep both day and night.  During times of bitter cold and snow, long rains, or sunny skies he was always there.  His master depended on him like no other to protect his flock from coyotes and stray dogs that happened to pass by. He is depicted here in early spring when the pink and purple clover and goat's beard wildflowers abound.  The sun is bright and the pasture is fresh as the new lambs bask in their secured freedom, and enjoy the pleasant morning air.  I painted Max in this scene to exonerate him and his heritage as a truly working breed in the role as guardian of livestock on the traditional farm.    -Suzanne
