"Cardinals in Winter"
When I was a child of about 12, I used to walk along the edge
of our nearby creek's high banks in wintertime when everything
was white with snow and quietly follow a pair of strikingly bright
cardinals. They moved among the  high tree branches, staying
just enough ahead of me so as not to cause them alarm, all the
while singing their various tunes.  I learned to mimic their songs
and tried to get them to call back to me.  I remember feeling they
were listening as they seemed to answer my whistling sounds.
The woods was so silent it was as if we existed along together.

I cherish those childhood memories, and to this day love the
cardinal above all other birds.  The male cardinal is truly a
gentleman and his wife a lady.  I have a pair at my feeder now
who are ever so polite.  They wait until the aggressive birds leave,
then quietly stop for a few oiled sunflower seeds just before dark.

One person I know has a pair in her yard where the male
retrieves a few seeds from the feeder and brings them back to
his mate waiting on the fence, and then feeds them to her.

I love the cardinals because they are faithful to their mates
and only rarely take another before they die.   Their bright
color and gentle spirit awake in me the part of winter I enjoy.
