When I was a child of about 12, I used to walk along the edge of our nearby creek's high banks in wintertime when everything was white with snow and quietly follow a pair of strikingly bright cardinals. They moved among the high tree branches, staying just enough ahead of me so as not to cause them alarm, all the while singing their various tunes. I learned to mimic their songs and tried to get them to call back to me. I remember feeling they were listening as they seemed to answer my whistling sounds. The woods was so silent it was as if we existed along together. I cherish those childhood memories, and to this
day love the
