Join artist Jessica Bohus in celebration at Blue Roan Studio
in Fennville on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 7:00 – 10:00
p.m. If you are a regular visitor to Blue Roan, you know the
parties are always worth clearing your calendar. If you’re
new to Bohus’ work, then this is the introduction you should
not miss. Whether it’s a 6 foot 2 inch showgirl made of
wire and found objects, a flame-worked Chihuahua, or an alien
in a jar, there’s something at her studio that will spark
your imagination and make you smile.
As you may have guessed from the title this year, Bohus has created
owl sculptures - full size Great Horned Owls swooping from the
ceiling down to tinny little owls no bigger than your thumb.
Using thin gauge steel wire she bends their figures out of the
air creating sculptures that are solid to the eye but have very
little actual mass. “In sixth grade I cut a “Nature
Notes” comic out of the Sunday paper. It had a beautiful
drawing of a Great Horned Owl in flight. I have loved Owls ever
since – they have a quiet power”, said Bohus.
Bohus was in the top 25 of ArtPrize in 2012. She is in the venue
selection process for Art Prize 2013 and plans a 20 to 30 part
sculpture entitled “Flight of Owls” for her entry.
“I like how when seen from afar these installations are
almost a tangle but then you begin to see single figures and
the parts of the whole emerge. ArtPrize provides a great opportunity
for me to experiment with installation of larger sculptures.
So far I have
venue proposals from a store who wants to install animals all
over and an interesting offer of a recessed outside ceiling.
I I’m glad have a few more weeks to make up my mind!”
she said.
Chris Ferris of Christine’s Catering will be providing refreshments
for the opening night party. Blue Roan Studio is located at:
6301, 122nd Avenue (West of Fenn Valley Winery) in Fennville.
Regular open hours for summer 2013 are Fridays & Saturdays
from 11-5 pm. Ms. Bohus’ work can also be seen at Good Goods
in downtown Saugatuck. |
