"Up For Air"
by Suzanne L. Adams

Story
"Up for Air" was inspired by my deep love, admiration and affection for dolphins.  Depicted here a young dolphin helps a human baby reach the ocean's surface for a breath of air, an ancient, mysterious custom a dolphin obligates himself to do for any struggling infant. Having no fear of humans, it's as if at some time in the past we shared our lives with these docile creatures.  If you look closely in the painting background, a beam of light is shining down on both the dolphin and the baby joining a common origin above, symbolizing their spiritual connection.  I was inspired to paint this image after reading an article in the USA Today Newspaper about a group of eight expectant human mothers who were heading for the Red Sea to deliver their babies in a pool with dolphins specifically trained to help handicapped and autistic children. Water is a natural birthing environment, and the dolphins are experts at helping to make a more relaxing atmosphere. The babies quickly learn to exercise their natural ability to swim underwater, while the dolphins watch closely in case they are needed to assist the parents in bringing their babies "up for air."  - Suzanne
