Books addressing the LS&I

The Lake Superior Iron Ore Railroads by Patrick C. Dorin is a fine book including several iron ore haulers like the DM&IR, LS&I, SOO, NP, C&NW, and others. It is out of print, but I happened to get a copy from a model railroad mail order house that had it on commission. It has several photos on the LS&I and discusses ore operations in great detail.

Heartland was written by Greg McDonnell and published by Boston Mills Press. Here is a review given to me by someone who bought the book: It is in full color, and all photos are good quality. It has about 5 pages dedicated to the L.S. & I. The following locomotives are shown, RS1 1002 down by the Marquette waterfront moving cars. Also shown in the photo is the William G. Mather. 2402 & 2400 in red up on the dock by Presque Isle switching cars. 1801, 1802 & 1803 up by Eagle Mills pulling a long string of ore cars. 2405, 2401 & 2303 (all in red) shown crossing the Dear River trestle. L.S. &. I. #35 2-8-0 Consolidation down in the west yard, before it was removed. 2405 in red up on blocks inside the Eagle Mills shop. This is the same photograph I told you earlier about. 2500 is shown in the corner. That's about it for the L.S. & I. There is another section about the C&NW down by Escanaba. There is a few more pages with their locomotives shown at different places.

U-Boats by the same author and publisher is also in full color. From the same reviewer: It has about 3 pages also showing various L.S.& I. motive power. At the front of the book there is a close up picture of GE's builders plate of 2501. 2501, 2404 & 2403 all in red in a nice night picture outside Eagle Mills shop. There is a rather interesting picture of 2302 (brown paint) being leased out to CP rail. It's shown somewhere in the midwest and 2302 is in the front of a long freight. 2304, 2303 & 2501 all in brown paint coming up the hill between West Yard and Eagle Mills pulling a long string of ore cars. There is no U-30C L.S. & I. pictures, but there is a few BN pictures to show what they must have looked like before they were purchased.

Michigan Ore Lines (video by Pentrex) is well worth the $20. I just got a copy. It shows the RSD12, RSD15, RS3, U23C, and U25C. Some shots of the various ore cars and other freight also. It also shows a little of the Chicago & Northwestern, and the Escanaba & Lake Superior.

Plets Express has a video on the C&NW during the time it exchanged taconite cars with the LS&I. It shows a little LS&I, but alot on the ore process. They are also going to do an LS&I soon.

Mark I also has a video with footage of the LS&I, C&NW, E&LS, and GB&W (a little). The title is Iron Ore, Alcos, and More.
